Diversity

Pitt Diversity Forum

The Writing Program is committed to diversity in all its forms, including, but not limited to racial, ethnic, sexual, gender, religious, and ability diversity. We strongly believe that a diverse student body and faculty is crucial to facilitating productive intellectual and creative conversations across identities; shaping a forward-thinking citizenry; making liberal arts education relevant to our contemporary moment; and, ushering in a more egalitarian future.

In 1994, the University of Pittsburgh established the K. Leroy Irvis Fellowships to enhance the academic excellence and diversity of the Pitt's graduate student body and prepare doctoral students for academic and research careers. This prestigious program provides a non-duty bearing fellowship for the student’s first year of study as well academic guidance and cohort-based mentoring. Since the fall of 2014, the Writing Program has nominated one entering MFA student for this fellowship each year.
