Molly Bain

Nonfiction

I’m a teacher, writer, and performer. Before coming to Pitt, I taught through Teach for America in the Detroit Public Schools, worked as an educational outreach coordinator for the University of Michigan’s LGBTA (the oldest university-sponsored queer resource center in the country!), and taught at the Community College of Allegheny County for several years. I’ve also volunteered as a literacy tutor through Pittsburgh’s GPLC and taught theatre fundamentals to 9-14 year-olds at Interlochen Arts Camp. I’ve written and performed two one-woman shows (which I often call ‘performative essays’), as well as numerous short monologues for competition and performance; I’ve also worked with choreographers, composers, and directors to adapt old text for and bring new text to various stages. An alum of the University of Michigan and Carnegie Mellon University, I’m currently a Nonfiction student here at Pitt. In the past year, I’ve worked on pieces on systems biology, autoimmune disorders, and one of my dearest and deepest passions, Lake Superior. Other tidbits: I have been a vegetarian for over a decade, am trying to teach my dog to ‘sing’ (howl on command), and, why yes, I do know how to tap dance.
