Alexis Lai

Nonfiction

Alexis is a journalist and writer with Canadian and Hong Kong origins. She has led a peripatetic life across seven countries, spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Her work is fueled by a keen sense of intellectual curiosity, unbridled passion for global travel, and deep appreciation of the well-written word. 

She is currently at work on a narrative nonfiction manuscript about Lebanon, blending reportage, history, travelogue, and memoir.

She has worked as a subeditor and features writer at The Daily Starnewspaper in Beirut, and digital reporter/producer at CNN’s Hong Kong bureau. She has also contributed stories on politics, business, and culture to The Wall Street JournalThe Phnom Penh PostSouth China Morning Post, and Time Out, among various news publications.

Alexis holds a bachelor's degree in Asian Studies from Cornell University (Phi Beta Kappa) and a master's degree in journalism (with distinction) from the University of Hong Kong. She has also completed intensive language training at National Taiwan University and the American University of Beirut.

She speaks English, Cantonese, Putonghua (Mandarin), French, and Arabic.
